I was pleased to see this PremiumBeat.com article online. It’s an interview with Anthony Milton.

I’m a personal fan. From the first time I met him, I thought his energy and forthrightness was great, as long as it didn’t lead to someone killing him. So far, so good! For me, he’ll be the first guy I try to get as an Assistant Director, and that’s because he proved me right when I asked him to AD on Tertium Quid.

Anthony Milton on set with the main actors and the director.

It was a learning experience for me as my experience with Anthony has primarily been commercials – fast paced and often humorous. Tertium Quid was a decidedly dramatic project. To Anthony’s credit, he did exactly what I asked him to do. Basically, I needed his help to keep me from getting “too serious” in the midst of the pressure of trying to shoot a crazy amount of dialogue in two days, when it should have been a 3-day shoot.

The challenges of that pressure cooker situation became evident, and I felt it personally. I’m pleased to report that Anthony helped me navigate all of it, as I knew he had a serious appreciation for the stakes at hand. His approach helped me stay focused. That’s why I asked for his help, and that’s what he did.

Anthony and Sean McCord provided direction to some of the newer crew.

The other key part of the Tertium Quid set was that, like many lower-budget projects, there were a number of rookies on set. We were blessed to have real pros working with us, but there were a number of people trying new positions or possibly being on their first set ever. Anthony’s appreciation for people trying to step up or get their foot in the door is sincere, in my opinion. That empathy and care was something I wanted to be a legit part of the Tertium Quid set. I personally think that makes it easier for the pros on set, as well. I’m not sure why, but I think (I hope) the pros can enjoy being even more appreciated since they know that the key people driving the set (the director and AD) are very much in tune with everyone’s skill levels. I think Anthony and I were actively encouraging to the rookies and even more appreciative of the real pros’ professional skills.

A group of real pros were key to Tertium Quid achieving legit quality.

I’m pretty sure, most people on set were there just doing what they do and not overthinking the dynamics as much as I was. However, I care about such things. My guess is that Anthony does as well, even though I’m pretty sure he’d respond to my comment by making some dismissive remark or joke about to “how Wallace is” as he blows smoke into the air and looks off set, and then promptly changes the subject.

This PB interview with Anthony is a good article. If you have someone in your life who wants to get into the business, Anthony is the king of PAs in my experience. He’s worth listening to – at least when if comes to PA’ing. I’m glad to have known him through that. I’m hoping he can help me again in the future as an AD.
