This site is a Globalstar Gateway Earth Station. While it sits quietly in the rolling hills of Bosque County, it is not just a local landmark; it is a bridge connecting mobile satellite users across North America to the rest of the world. Every time a remote hiker triggers a satellite SOS signal, a field researcher sends data from a desolate location, or a commercial vessel needs a reliable voice link, that data travels through our local horizon before being routed across the planet’s fiber-optic backbones.
In the telecommunications industry, this facility is classified as a “Gateway Earth Station.” Think of it as a specialized translator. Satellite signals travel through the vacuum of space at high frequencies, and they cannot simply “plug in” to your home internet or the cell phone network. They require a sophisticated, industrial-scale facility to act as an interface.

While the physical infrastructure on the ground is expanding rapidly, the corporate banner flying over it has just experienced an earthquake. In a massive tech industry consolidation, Amazon has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Globalstar in an $11.5 billion blockbuster deal. Amazon is absorbing Globalstar’s entire satellite fleet, global spectrum licenses, and its prized physical ground network – including our gateway right here in central Texas.
The internet retail and cloud giant plans to integrate these assets directly into its burgeoning “Amazon Leo” low Earth orbit satellite ecosystem. By doing so, Amazon aims to instantly inject “Direct-to-Device” (D2D) cellular capabilities into its network, extending mobile coverage to consumer, enterprise, and government customers in the most remote corners of the planet.
Historically, Apple has been the driving force behind this specific new infrastructure, injecting $1.1 billion into Globalstar to fund the C-3 constellation in exchange for 85% of its network capacity to power the iPhone’s emergency satellite messaging. So, with this sudden corporate acquisition, the immediate question for the tech world is “what happens to Apple?”
To clear the runway for the buyout, Amazon, Globalstar, and Apple formed a massive three-way agreement. Under the terms of the deal, Amazon has legally committed to fully supporting Apple users. The Clifton ground station will continue to route and safeguard the emergency SOS and satellite features for current and upcoming iPhone and Apple Watch models. Furthermore, Amazon and Apple will actively collaborate on next-generation satellite services using the expanded network.
As a side benefit of this astronomical corporate shuffle, Apple’s 20% equity stake in Globalstar has turned into a massive $2.3 billion windfall. Basically, the business of space data is more valuable than ever.
